Technical definition
The annual dollar limit is the CRA-prescribed yearly TFSA contribution cap, indexed to inflation and rounded to the nearest $500. The 2026 limit is $7,000. This amount is added to each eligible individual's contribution room on January 1 each year, beginning the year they turn 18 and are a Canadian resident.
Examples
- • On January 1, 2026, every eligible adult receives $7,000 in new TFSA room on top of any unused carry-forward.
- • The annual limit was $5,000 from 2009–2012, $5,500 from 2013–2014, $10,000 in 2015, and has been $6,000–$7,000 since.
